Celebrity trends report: Romantic goth, long

Jun 05, 2023

Some might consider sartorial trends as the very antithesis to the concept of personal style. Yet there is unmistakable room for contention, most aptly encapsulated by the sheer fact that the designers we so love are ever-inspired by the world we reside in—which by extension, includes the clothes we choose to wear. These ‘trends’ that we see play out before us then, can simply be regarded as reflections of ourselves—constantly changing and evolving with the times. Undeniably, it is our favourite celebrity faces who are the walking embodiment of this. Day in, day out, droves of A-listers have been cementing themselves as style mavens, transforming the streets of the cities they traipse through their personal runways.

Knowing that their sartorial choices are a playground for self-expression, they experiment with their ever-expanding wardrobes, filled with vintage memorabilia and their most coveted picks from the latest collections in town. And here’s where we discover it all; from the wardrobe heroes they hold close to heart to the defining mood of the season. As of late, mesh ballet flats have been sitting in line with a persisting balletcore movement, swimsuits are the certified beach uniform and looks that scream Barbie are all lined up at the forefront. As for all the other moments in-between, it seems the summer of ‘naked dressing’ seems to be intertwined with celebs rediscovering their romantic goth era (see: Sabrina Carpenter or Rina Sawayama‘s recent performance looks), whilst bridal-esque whites show its hand as the hue of the summer.

Peruse the latest sartorial trends currently favoured by the celebrity set, from Dua Lipa and Rosalía to the girls of (G)I-DLE and Blackpink.

Perhaps the fresh, bright hue is truly the ultimate colour of the summer. Whilst the likes of Dua Lipa, Hailey Bieber and Nicola Coughlan might all be making a case for the bridal-inspired white frock, the rest of the celebrity set are clearly in favour of wearing the hue in general. Case in point? The variations of top-to-toe ensembles from Twice’s Nayeon and The Summer I Turned Pretty star Lola Tung.

This summer has no doubt seen the naked dressing trend brought to life—see the after-party captures of Kendall Jenner or the multitude of idyllic beach-worthy moments from the likes of a certain mermaid Barbie. But delve deeper into this tangent, one might see it intersecting with yet another rising sartorial movement: screaming of gothic romance. Cult celebrity brand Dilara Findikoglu has epitomised the contemporary version of said look—playing with lace, ribbons and subversive, body-hugging silhouettes—as seen on style maven Devon Lee Carlson. Elsewhere, Sabrina Carpenter, Rina Sawayama and Jennie Kim present their own renditions for their own stage performances, our July/August cover star notably wearing Simone Rocha.

Talk about a blast to the past, as bandanas are an It-accessory all over again. From Kendall Jenner utilising it as a finishing touch to her farmer girl aesthetic to Le Sserafim’s Yunjin amping up the boho vibe by teaming it with her baby braids, it’s clear the city girls around the globe are making it known. Pro-tip? Colour-coordination is definitely key here.

Perhaps the summer brief that demands the least amount of fabric possible is not completely necessary here. Whilst keeping it light and airy around the torso—with a definitively cropped silhouette—the It-girls everywhere have clearly taken to another side to the crop, where longer sleeves take the reins. Whilst Blackpink’s Lisa and Rosalía are opting for a fresh, off-duty pairing with midi skirts, (G)I-DLE’s Minnie is ever the cool girl with her fitted variation teamed with jeans.

Think an itsy-bitsy top, with frills and things. In the case of Kylie Jenner and Emily Ratajkowski, their coquettish attire is met with a cottagecore slant, as per their frilly co-ords with a bare-it-all attitude. Whilst the likes of Hyoyeon from Girls’ Generation jazzes it up with a great deal of accompanying accessories, including a belt and suede camel jacket.
